SMP and Winnt - how well does it handle 2 processors?

how well does NT 4 handle dual processors?

I really want to use Win2k, unfortunately Mustek doesn't make Win2k drivers for my scanner. :/ Therefore, I'm stuck with winnt.

I'm going to be building a dual p3-700 setup using the Tyan Tiger 133 rev. F. I want the udma66 ability as well as the 4x agp... that's why i'm going with this board vs. a BX board (besides, I have slot 1 processors).

Since the apollo pro was made long after winnt, will I have a problem installing it and having it recognize the dual setup?

This doesn't make sense to me. You're saying that you are willing to put up with an inferior(not bad) product because of a scanner driver issue?

Is your scanner vital to your work? Will it cost too much to replace it?

If the answer is yes to both questions then it makes some sense, but if the above is not true then either get a new scanner or dual boot and do your scanning under W98 and your processing on W2k.

I have an old scanner too, with no official drivers for W2k, but it still works somehow. Except for the Xerox utilty. So whenever I need to xerox something I boot into W98 and dd the service. Except now that I haven't been able to boot W98 since I moved my cards aroud, hehe 😱

But to answer your question, NT4 does a fine SMP job. And W2k does too.

I just downloaded the scan software for new software from Umax for my Astra 1220S, and it worked fine. Mine's a SCSI though, so if you have a paralell or USB scanner you may be out of luck.

Besides which, you'd have to have an amazing scanner if it were pre-Win2K, and not competative with some of those $100 scanners out now. Mine wasn't cheap when I bought it, but it was no better features then a $70 Visioneer does now.

FWIW, your scanner *may* be natively supported in Win2K. Try connecting it to a Win2K box and see what happens.

I have the Mustek MFS-1200SP which is a SCSI scanner... i've tried many times to get it to work with Win2k, but it wont. Unfortunately, there is no native support. I tried using the NT 4 drivers but again... no luck.

personally... winnt is a pain in the ass... I like win2k alot more...

but this is for my mother's machine and the scanner is a vital piece of hardware for her.

any other suggestions?
