I'm getting ready to test a new client roll out. That will employ a firewall for wireless access. If these users need access to internal network resources they will vpn back into the network. I have 2 firewall choices I can use for my test setup I can go with smoothwall express 2.0 or astaro linux 4.0. Basically which do you guys think would best server my situation. Also has anyone seen astaro or smoothwall deployed in a corporate environment just wondering because the client is vey concerned about budget.

I use SmoothWall Express at work for our Proxy/Cache. For what you want to do, ASTARO is really needed. ASTARO has much more configuration and routing rules ( stock ) than SmoothWall. You can also use it as a fully transparent firewall. The downside is cost.

Well since I'm in a test lab I can download the personnel edtion or I can use the 30 day eval on there site. It might take me longer than 30 days so I'll most likely test on the personnel edition. So have you seen Astaro used in a business before. If I like it the company will purchase it I just trying to find a cheaper solution than deploying a sonicwall, or cisco pix.

Astaro also has a forum for help if you need it. The only problem with Astaro is that it needs a pretty beefy system to run it.(no Pentium2s)

Well I'm testing on a 1gig duron with 512 ddr2100. I think this will be enough. Of course if I deploy it will be on a low end p4 dell rack mount.
