I currently have an XP1900+, 512 Samsung PC2700 DDR, Asus A7V8X-X and a Radeon 9700 Pro, on Cat 3.4s. Not to seem ungrateful, but when i load Battlefield 1942, for example, at 16 x 12, 16AF, and 4XAA, I appear to be getting very playable frame rates, and I'm thrilled. But I was told that 4X AA at 16x12 on P4 3.06Ghz machines was tough. I'm running Quality AA/AF, though the textures detail within the game is at only 80%. At 4X, there does appear to be less shimmering and jagged edges. Is anyone else getting similar results? Or maybe my Smoothvision isn't working the way it's supposed to be, i.e it should run at 1280 x 1024, 16X, 4X instead. Do I need to define a specific refresh rate in a game to get Smoothvision to work properly? Any thoughts?

sounds like you are doing fine. i get playable framerates with my 9700pro at the same detail settings as you. i think the question is: what defines playable? some think anything above 15-20 is fine. some think 30 is the lower limit. personally, i wasn't satisifed with these settings, so I dropped the res to 1024/768.

P4 2.4, 512MB PC2100 RAM, non OC'ed 9700. using x4AA/x16AF ALL THE TIME. leave it on and forget it :)
btw, use performance AF if you want. faster (by a bit) than Quality AF but looks the same.
