"Smooth edges of screen fonts" won't stay off... WinXP Pro

Here's a problem that is irritating...

Every so often the Smooth edges of screen fonts option (in Performance settings) spontaneously turns itself on. I'll go and uncheck it, click OK and it goes away, only to reappear later on (usually a day or two).

I'm running WinXP Pro, and I leave my machine on unless I have a compelling reason to restart or shutdown - and this problem has definitely survived several restarts.

do you have the ATI utility (or any other utility that saves desktop / display settings) running?

Can you make any correlation between rebooting and this setting being "magically" changed?
