What was the catalyst that helped you ditch smoking?

I quit about a year ago. I smoked for almost three years. I think it's disgusting now. Although, i do smoke the shisha hookah and cigars once in a while :)

Fear of dying one day of cancer.

No joke.

Didn't want to let it go any longer, I started smoking in 1995 and quit in 2003, I figured if I didn't do it then I'd never do it, so I just said f it and did it.

I also stopped drinking for about 3 months since in the past whenever I tried to quit, at the first night out drinking it all went out the window. I also tried to keep away from smoke buddies at work and friends smoking in general. It wasn't easy, but after the first 3 months or so it got a lot easier.

I wasn't what I'd consider a heavy smoker either FWIW, I'd smoke about a pack per work week and on the weekend I might go through as many as two packs while partying and drinking.

Now I can't stand the smell of smoke and wonder HTH I ever even started in the first place.

I really did, just felt disgusted each time towards the end that I was still doing it, I finally one day took what I had left of a pack and flushed then down the toilet and never took so much as a drag of anything whatsoever after that.

i'd like to see a study on how many kids started smoking because their parents did. i remember telling my mom and dad that i would smoke because i wanted to be like dad.

of course, that was before "second hand smoke" and he'd come home from work and have 3 or 4 dewars and chain smoke till he went to bed. it was no big deal then.

My parents never smoked (in front of me at least) that I can recall.

I know they used to smoke and "claimed" to had stopped when they became preggers with my older brother, but I did find cigs in my Dads dresser a few times over the years :p
