Smoking PSU

Today my PSU fried itself.
after smelling a very strong smell from the computer, i quickly disconnected everything and shut it off (everything was working properly graphs on screen were moving and all) and saw that the PSU was smoking (took it out).
My computer is running with i7 930 (stock) with a212+, EX58A, 5750CF 6gb and five screens connected to the GPUs, all of that is powered by a probably fried OCZ modXstream 700W.
I'm very concerned that the PSU fried some stuff besides itself. i'm RMA-ing the psu tomorrow and buying another one.

To cut the story short, my PSU is probably fried. I dunno what to do next with the rest of the parts (buy anew one and just plug it in and hope for the best?)
and second, I don't know what PSU i should buy next.

You're probably gonna have to jsut wait until you get a replacement PSU to test the other components. Hopefully, nothing else died.

Antec, Corsair, Enermax, and maybe Seasonic are good PSU brands. (Is Seasonic still good? Don't see too many people recommend it...)
 
Seasonic are awesome they make a lot of PSUs that then get rebranded by others. I think the early high end Corsairs were rebranded Seasonics. The new ones are made by CWT.

You have that backwards... kind of.

A good portion of Corsairs PSU's are still Seasonic. CWT not so much if at all anymore.

Antec uses Seasonic still I think too.
 
I thought Seasonic is a good brand, because I knew a lot of other PSUs are just rebranded Seasonics. Still, most people seem to go for more well known names like Antec or Corsair, which is why I was a bit hesitant in recommending Seasonic.

BTW, what's CWT?

Approx. half of Corsair's power supplies are built by Seasonic and the other half by CWT......the exception is the AX1200 which is built by Flextronics.

Antec is using Delta (Earthwatts, High Current Pro) and Enhance (True Power Quattro) a lot lately for their OEM's along with Seasonic (TruePower New).

Channel Well Technology, one of the larger power supply OEM's, like Seasonic. But I'd put Seasonic on a bit higher step than CWT's offerings.

Haven't seen anything out of CWT to compare to Seasonic's X-Series (and Corsair's "identical" two lower output AX Series) power supplies.

I can't recommend Seasonic enough. They make fantastic PSUs. This one would meet your needs and is 80+Gold certified. Corsairs are very good too, though, and the price is definitely right on the one that fffblackmage recommended.

As for your gear, I'd be optimistic if everything was still working when you shut it off.
 
You did the right thing immediately pulling the plug. I see so many people do the wrong thing , they either go through the shutdown process or turn it off then turn it back on to see if it was really damaged. Always pull the plug as quick as you can and do not power it again until you determine the problem.
