Smoking Hot for the Chicago Burbs. Fry's !!!

My first Hot Deal post and I think its pretty huge.

Fry's Electronics is opening a store in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove, IL. Near the corner of Finley and Butterfield right off the I-355 tollway.

Savaging through Fry's website shows nothing, but it is certain that the store is there. Its up and standing and I can tesify with my own two eyes. The store is currently empty but should be stocking soon as I see little construction equipment anywhere.

I was able to find another forum discussing the same topic. Read Here

Can't wait for the local Fry's deals. I was always so envious of those damn west coasters.

edit: better title for search

DUUUDE!!! I heard this rumor. I lived in Texas the last 22 years and was sad to not have a Fry's here (uh in addition to the insaely cold weather). Unfortunately, now I will hear the little voices in my head again telling me to go to Fry's ( you need a new mobo combo...come on, it's only $99.00) Oh well, bad for the pocket book but good for the soul...

Remember the Fry's shopping mantra... and repeat... Buy nothing unless it's on ad! You people have a distorted view of Fry's. Their only deals are on ad items, and then when you catch a REALLY good deal, they'll refuse to honor their own ad protesting that it was the newspaper's error and they're not responsible for the newspaper messing up.

and oh... they use to have a huge line-up in the morning sale after Christmas clearance certain items but haven't done so in the past couple years and I have 3 stores around me.

But see for yourselves. For instance, the current ad has a boxed intel 2.8gHz P4 with 533-fsb with a ECS mobo combo for $159. EVERY mobo box in my closed store is labeled as an open box/possible return item. Turned my brother off on the deal. And a good buddy bought one anyway and when attempting to install in a new Fry's case (oh... make sure the ps supports P4 cause Fry's won't tell you) he finds that the backing plate has cut-outs that don't even match the mobo ports.

But hey... see for yourselves unbelievers

Posted this a few months ago, but they have made alot of progress, I drive past it everyday for work.

you just have to find the right mobo.

most of the time people don't care for the mobos anyway. i've had luck buying fry's combos in the past.

What gopher hole do you live in - There is a Fry's in Dallas and in Houston.

And Austin and Plano and probably other Texas cities as well. I don't think there's one in San Antonio, but Wazing2 is right, Texas is not devoid of Frys

I'm confused, why is Fry's so good? I went there because everyone hyped it up but everything was way more expensive than Newegg and the price tags were almost impossible to read.

I'm not bashing, I'm just curious

I think russw sums it up pretty well.

Fry's can have REALLY good deals, but you're right that a lot of the stuff can be found elsewhere for less

It seems every week there is an awesome ad sale there. Also compared to other computer, electronic, appliance stores, Fry's is HUGE. So much selection. Sure its not always as cheap as Newegg, but its a local place to get something right when you need it.

Living here in So. Cal., Fry's are all over the place. Trust me when I tell you guys that are Jonesing for a Fry's, you're not missing anything. Their service is the worst, they are overpriced, a lot of their hardware is generic no name junk as evidenced by what you see in people's shopping carts. Although they do have some brand items but most of that stuff has a Blue "returned/opened" sticker on it. A lot of what they have on the shelves looks like it was stocked by airport baggage handlers. Boxes are thrashed and taped together. Sales people tend to a bit clueless and customer service lines are out the door. Not a good thing to see when you've never been to one.

You would think I've been burned by Fry's but that is not that case. After frequenting various stores (Burbank, Manhattan Beach and Fountain Valley), they seem to all be the same in terms of quality of merchandise, restock cycles and quality of service. Bottom line, I don't buy many things from there.

Hm... I live in IL and although you guys make it sound so bad I don't think anyone is as clueless as you're picturing them. Fry's opening would mean a lot here, simply because you can pricematch products to more reputable stores. And besides even if you can't pricematch you can always take a shot and buy it from fry's, if you get lucky - good, if not then not.

Corner of Finley and Butterfiels - which corner, is it the same one where CompUSA used to be?

Fry's can have some incredible deals, but don't go there expecting everything to be 1/2 off BB's price.

In the past 3 days, i've gotten:

2 copies of UT2K4 Special Edition for $25 a piece
2 Case Logic 208 CD Binders for $5 each
2 decent blowdryers for $3 each
2 surge protectors FAR
A decent looking ATX case for $5 AR (of course, Fry's rebates are YMMV, but seeing the sheer # of people that purchased the case during the grand opening sale I highly doubt it's Fry's intention to turn away all those new customers by refusing the rebate

Of course, like a lot of other people I've run into problems with those dreaded MB/CPU combos with the "may have been returned" sticker, but I think the risk is just as great with a newegg refurb and is less of a hassle to return/exchange it. Most of the time, if you know how Fry's works, you can find a new MB/CPU combo for the same great price.

Fry's can be the greatest thing you've ever seen or one of the worst experiences of your life. Fortunately for a lot of people it's the first one.

Near that same corner where Compusa USED to be. Just a little further south on Finley on the same side of the street.

You mean that CUSA closed down? I worked there for a couple of months about 2 years ago. When did it close?

I'm pretty certain CUSA is still there. I was just there like 2 months ago, I think, but I pass it all the time, and the sign is still there. I am so pumped about this, I live 10 minutes from there!!! I hate Best Buy so much! I have $125 in gift cards there, but I never want to spend them because I always find better deals elsewhere, so it's painful to "waste" the cards on something I could get cheaper. I keep telling myself wait until BB has a killer deal on something and then use the cards. Anyway, Fry's will be nice.

It didn't close, per se, it moved to a bigger place up Butterfield about a mile.

And I believe Fry's is moving into the old CarMax building south of where the old CompUSA was. I've been looking forward to this for a while. I see all these Fry's hot deals and didn't used to be able to get in on them. But I still remember Fry's from when I lived in Cali... these guys got it right... you wait for the ad specials and even then it will be tough, but not to us hardcore deal hunters. 😀

That is 1 mile from my house. WooHoo

One more store to take my money.

Within 1.5 miles of my house I have: Home Depot, Walmart, OfficeMax, BestBuy, CompUSA, Circuit City, and now a Fry's. Costco and Sam's are less than 5 miles away.

I love competition. I am in price matching heaving.
