Just went to fry's to see if they had the Maxtor 300GB HD In-Store, they unfortunately didn't. But they did have Windows Vista Home Premium for $99. It was on the ad when my friend and I walked in.

I'm in SoCal, maybe they have this deal elsewhere too.

OEM full versions are fine. they are the same as retail, no matter what the EULA says. i have already had to re-activate my OEM instal twice over the phone, and microsoft does not care how many times you activate. they only care about one thing- "how many computers is this copy of vista installed on?" thats it.

The are not "the same as retail" -- you can't get support from Microsoft for a OEM license. That's fine for people who know what they are doing but I wouldn't advise using an OEM license for your relatives unless you want to be saddled with keeping them running.

LOL. You get better support using google than you do from MS. Go ahead and call with an issue and see.

This is a ton better than the one in the pretty box.

Better off spend your hard earned $$$ with OEM than retailed.

yeah ms phone support is ALL that you get when you pay twice the price. trust me, they dont differentiate between OEM and retail when activating. i wouldnt even be surprised if i called ms support with my OEM key they would still help me. M$ doesnt care what we buy, they just want us to buy a valid key for each pc, oem or not.

imo the absolute smartest move they made was allowing the OEM licenses to run free, and making them available at half the price. this makes vista affordable to everyone and gets those who were hesitant to upgrade their XP boxes to do so

I might have to drive about 15 minutes to the Wilsonville, OR Fry's...

I guess the question for me really remains is whether I really need it and it is worth the hassles? Our IT guys at work (supporting ~300 PCs have been playing with Vista on a couple of reasonable spec'd machines and they still think this OS is the pits. Their last comment when I asked is that they hope this one will go the way of ME and MS will quickly send out a revised version that doesn't suck so much.

yeah yeah yeah everyone hates on MS no matter how good their stuff is. Vista is incredible imo. rock solid, most everything works seamlessly from xp, audio is VASTLY improved, automatic conditioning keeps the os from bogging down over time like XP, made-for-broadband networking unlike xp, 10x better install process, on-disk mem test and system restore, readyboost, security, security SECURITY! the most common problems people have relates to vista just being more locked down then xp was, so its harder to get xp apps to work if they deal with important system functions like VNC. other then that, the stereo-type that vista is incompatible with a large majority of apps is simply unfounded.
