Tempted to hop on one of these 2gb ddr2 kit hot deals for the new build I'm going to do here in a month, but also wondering about the prices of 4gb kits. Oh well I have 3 weeks or so to wait and see.

I really think the release of DDR3 on the 9th has something to do with this. Anyone have an inside scoop as to what is really going on? $85 when people were paying 200-300 a couple months ago? Something is up.....

Never thought I'd regret my Buy.com memory purchase of early this morning! Cripes... between memory & processor price cuts, and lower cost 650i m/b's, it's hard to pass on updating systems.

Right there with ya..ordered mine at like 12:30 this morning :( They havent shipped yet...I should have called and cancelled. May do that first thing in the morning.

What sucks is I used Google Checkout to get my $10 off. If I cancel this order...I guess that means I loose my chance at a free $10, right?

And does buy.com charge a restocking fee if I refuse shipping?

Im sure they will. The problem is this deal is on fatwallet and hardocp as well so.... Thats why it went OOS so fast. :p

As for the person who asked about the coupon expiring. I have no idea, but its been valid for over a week now, so I would expect it to expire soon. I have no clue where it originated from though so... :)

For those who bought the memory from buy.com and have questions about refusing shipment/restocking fees...I pulled this from their https://secure.buy.com/corp/support/returns/default.asp?what=EWRfee#EWRfee">site</a> (paying special attention to the part I bolded):

Basic Return Policy
? Unless otherwise stated below, you have 14 days from the date your product left the warehouse (regardless of when you actually took delivery of the product) to get a valid RMA from our website and get your product to a shipper to return back to us. It does not have to be back in our warehouse within 14 days, but it does have to be in the possession of the shipper (along with the valid RMA). RMAs must be valid, unexpired, and issued for the product being returned. Only one RMA is issued per return. When it expires, you may no longer return your product.
? If you are ineligible for an RMA, contact the manufacturer directly or check any applicable warranty you might have. See the Manufacturer Contact List at the bottom of this page.
? Except as provided for verified defective products (See Special Returns Policy for Defective Products below), you will be responsible for all shipping charges for returns sent to our Returns Warehouse.
? All products are subject to a 15% restocking fee (except where prohibited by law) if returned opened or in a non-factory sealed box, provided that there is no restocking fee for defective products (see Special Returns Policy for Defective Products below).
? Upon our acceptance of the merchandise in like new condition in strict conformance with the basic criteria and basic returns policy, the purchase price will be credited to the credit card used for the original purchase. For merchandise purchased with a gift card as the sole payment method, we will refund the balance due to you back to a new gift card unless the balance is less than $5 or prohibited by law.
? Please allow up to fourteen days from shipment for your return to arrive at our Returns Warehouse, delivery times vary based on shipper selected. Your return will be processed within 5-7 business days (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays) after receipt of the item.
? Many of the items we sell have Special Return Policies. See the appropriate policy below to see if items you purchase are affected.

So as far as I can tell...if you refuse the shipment...you will get full refund and NO restocking fee, as the memory will still be sealed in the box.

I will probably call tomorrow and ask someone on the phone also and I will update this thread at that time.

This deal is freaking smoking. How low are memory prices going to go??? If I'm going to do a build in the winter, should I jump now?

Who knows. I keep saying they cant go any lower then they do. Really, I dont see how 2gb of micron d9 chips that do 1200mhz can drop much more than $85 lol. Id buy it if I were you. (If it comes back in stock that is.:))

When is AM3 coming out (or chipsets/processors that support DDR3 in general). Late 2008?

Ok, I'm getting a little irritated by talk that DDR3 will be so much better than this [cr__], memory I just bought. WTF.
Why? No sooner did I buy 2GB of Corsair XMS DDR at deep discount than AM2 appears and pushes out socket 939 with it's support for DDR. Sound familiar? What if we bought this stuff and later this month we suffer buyer's remorse cause DDR3 becomes the darling child of motherboards with the new chipsets?
And what of AMD? Will any of those long awaited processors incorporate memory controllers for DDR2?

Where's my damn coffee?

Watch out... AMD comes out of nowhere with a 65nm 6MB sharing L2 CPU with on-die XDR/DDR3 memory controller and pwns Intel %25 clock for clock :p

It's my understanding that K10 will support socket AM2 and DDR2, at least initially.

While DDR3 will be pretty cool sometime in the future, right now it's not. The best timings I've seen listed at 1066 are CAS6, with CAS7 being the JEDEC spec. DDR2 can run circles around that. DDR2 has taken a long time to mature into the speedy chips that are now available, and it'll take a while for DDR3 to catch up.

When they start shipping DDR3-1866 with some decent latencies, I'll be right there in line. For now, I'm buying some really fast DDR2 for not much money and loving it.

You know, that's what I was thinking before I bought all 8 GB of Ballistix. But somebody said that DDR3 was a much better design than DDR2 which made me think that to mean that it would be easier to tweek thus taking many fewer months than it did for DDR2 to mature.
Hey, I love improvements in technology that I use daily. I assume, like Napoleon's brother Kit, that most people here do to. So, I'm glad and eager for DDR3 to be a smash. Sooo, what the heck. I'll use what I got, sell some in systems I'll build, mess with some server OSs and have some fun.

DDR3-1600 won't be too far out. http://www.jedex.org/images/pdf/b_gervasi_modules.pdf

While I am not sure if the speed gains will offset the low latency on the DDR2, I imagine it will be close and with the addition of the Bearlake chipsets and 45nm higher speeds quad cores I think it will be ok, even early on :)

I have nothing right now, I was about to start building a Core 2 Box with DDR2, but I have decided to wait for the Bearlake, Penryn, DDR3 boat. I can't hold out for Nehalem, too far out for me.

I will wait until AMD drops their stuff or the first major price drops, hopefully sometime in the middle of the Fall semester so I can have a nice project :)

DDR3 does offer improvements, but if you are already working with DDR2 there is nothing wrong with buying these parts at a steal and improving your existing rig. Good luck to everyone who got in.

I would suggest waiting until next week though, I think the rebates will be out and the memory will hit rock bottom. If that happens, I just might pick some up for the fun :D Have fun!

Features

DDR3 SDRAM Components:

* Introduction of asynchronous RESET pin
* Support of system level flight time compensation
* On-DIMM Mirror friendly DRAM ballout
* Introduction of CWL (CAS Write Latency) per speed bin
* On-die IO calibration engine
* READ and WRITE calibration

DDR3 Modules:

* Fly-by command/address/control bus with On-DIMM termination
* High precision calibration resistors

Advantages compared to DDR2

* Higher bandwidth (up to 1600 MHz)
* Performance increase at low power
* Longer battery life in laptops
* Enhanced low power features and thermal design

Latency is just a matter of time, just like it was with DDR2. What I am saying is that if you are starting fresh the way to go is probably waiting for Bearlake, Penryn, DDR3. If you have a current rig with DDR2 or are building right now because you have to, DDR2 is great and still the way to go.

It doesn't run slow, it runs faster. It does have lower latency however you make it sound like the shift to DDR3 is a waste of time. If it was it wouldn't be happening. Technology moves forward big, WooHoo. Buy your DDR2 no one is stopping you.

3x as much? Where did you get that pricing? I looked and couldn't find it. Considering no one is selling it, it is a little sensationalist and possibly defensive to make a wild statement.
