Yes it's true on my trek to find an mp3 player I stumbled across this.
The Nex IIe by Frontier Labs.
linky

It's an affordable player with lots of goodies that cost hundreds more in other players.

I just ordered it from a store for 186.99 that includes a 256mb 20x flashcard and free shipping.

--------All of these features-------------------

2 in 1 Capability - NEX IIe is both a music player and doubles as a portable drive for fast & easy file transfer and storage.

Compact ergonomic design, super light, and portable (90x60x20mm, 65g) yet houses two AA batteries for more than twice your music play time compared to any other mp3 players of similar size. Over five times the play time compared with players that uses one AAA battery.

Fully interactive high-resolution LCD user interface: 112x64 matrix. Configurable (normal, always on, always off) Neon blue EL backlight, changeable screen modes that can display scrolling ID3 tags or Pulsating Spectrum Analyzer Bars, song duration, memory level, battery level, and more! " Black LCD display for black NEX IIe and white LCD display for white NEX IIe.

Infinite expansion capability via NEX II?'s ability to accept different modular plug-ins.

"Smart Power" NEX IIe?'s improved circuit design allows for drawing power from USB. This not only allows you to save battery life during song transfers but it can also power itself via AC power adapter.

hmm looks like there is no base memory, so you have to buy a flash card too...

as far as i can tell at least.

You do have to buy a flash card, but what small versatile mp3 player has 256 mb for under $190 ? And can still be upgraded to 1 gb+ whenever the larger microdive or flash cards come out?

Im excited to see what this thing can do.

And the company that sells it is supposed to be reliable and quick.
I went to the yahoo forums and nothing major has happened to anyone yet with this newer model.

Keep posting if you find anything a potential new owner should know. I can always cancel tomorrow.

I wouldn't buy one with the plan of buying a 1gb microdrive. At $190 + the price of a microdrive (at *least* $100), you're drifting up to the price of the Creative Labs Nomad 'Zen' player that is just coming out. 20-gig, Ipod size & styling, firewire AND usb connectivity - pretty much the hole grail of portable MP3 players as far as I'm concerned. Just wish it had an FM radio built in...

The IIe isn't that old, yes, but the II has been out for a long while.. and this IIe was suppose to be out a lot earlier.

But as far as costs go, it's $100 + the microdrive or very large CF, not $190 + microdrive. And the key benefit here is it's a lot lighter, and not HD based so you can be a bit more abusive with it (assuming you go CF). It all depends on your usage. IMO, i would rather have this, as i have no use for 5-20GB of mp3's on me at one time :) to each his own tho

lnguyen, you are thinking along the same lines as I was.

I plan on taking this to the gym, class, possibly running, the beach, etc...

First I would be more afraid to lose a $400-500 IPOD.
Second The larger capacity ones would have more problems with skipping.
Third, What the heck am I going to do with 3000 hours of music at any one time.
It would take forever to put the music in it, find the songs you want to play and a lot of other things.

Not to say I wouldn't want an IPOD, those things are awesome lol.
But so pricey.

I would suggest avoiding these. I owned the nex II for a couple of mins. before I knew it needed to go on ebay so someone else could own my mistake. They are really cheap junk inside & out. I managed to break a button within seconds & I put on the headphones just long enough to hear them snap, crackle, & pop at higher volumes so I grabbed a pair of Sennheisers & same thing.

By the way if you want to get 1gb out of this you are looking at over $300 & you still own a piece of junk. Do yourself a favor and buy an IPOD :)

I reviewed one of these for my column a few months back. These are absolutely horrible. They sound like crap, they're cheaply made, and are not worth the money. I'm sorry you bought one :(
