Hi,

I recently got a new computer with the following specs..

Core 2 Duo e6300
ASUS P5B Deluxe
OCZ 1GB Platinum 800
250GB Seagate SATA Drive
Antec 450 Watt Power Supply
ATI x700

Upon my first boot i saw a bit of smoke come up from the following section of the motherboard..please see picture:

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/8969/motherboardyp3.jpg

I quickly hit the power and turned off the system. It smelt burnt for a little while...

I don't want to give it power again until i know what it could be. I don't think it was the RAM...

There also wasnt enough time for it to post so im not sure if it works or not.

Now i've just tried it with a different powersupply that works for sure and there is no post and the CPU fan will not start. However, all other fans including the one on the video card start. Aswell, the lights on the motherboard do light up (red, blue, red, blue).

Please help!

My guess is either a capacitor (the tall cylinders with metal tops) blew or your main motherboard plug (the 24-pin white plug below the black floppy connector) wasn't fully connected, and it melted a bit. Check to see if any of the capacitors in that area have bulging tops, or if the white 24-pin ATX power plug is discolored.

Keep in mind that your motherboard needs a CPU in the socket to post.

Don't try again. You may cook the rest of the system, or burn down your house. Take (send) it back to where you got it and let them worry about it and fix it.

The 24 pin is black so I can't see any discoloration... the capacitors look fine but I can see a tiny bit of copper showing (the black paint has slightly scratched away) near one of the capacitors. Yes, the CPU is installed.

I'm not sure if that cap serves the VRM for the RAM, it might.
The smoke was probably from a shorted cap or an over heated VRM because of the shorted cap.
Dang! Alot of newer ASUS boards are being posted with issues. One might have had cold solder joints at the cap legs.

Email for an RMA and DO CALL them on the phone. They are not responding to emails as they should.
