Smoke from mobo

so I made the dumb ass mistake of plugging my atx 12v connector into a pci port in my psu which caused a spark and some smoke. After switching out the psu the computer gets power and will turn on but won't post. When unplugging the 12v connector, it does the same thing. Is my mobo gone or is this something else? Maybe even savable?

I'm not much of an optimist. It sounds like the motherboard is gone.

You likely shorted a power supply lead to ground through the motherboard. That likely passed enough current to melt something on the motherboard.

I'm assuming that "PCI port on my psu" means a six-pin PCI-E power connector coming from your power supply, which you plugged into an eight-pin ATX12V connector on your motherboard?

Because my psu is modular I have a series of eight pin connectors on it which you plug molex etc into it. I plugged the atx 12v into the pci. Is there anything I can do to test to see if that is the case?

They're always savable... If I knew more about electronics I might be able to tell you what you burned and replace it.. I'm wondering though, if the current would pass through the entire board and basically burn everything. If not, you could isolate the part and solder in a new one. My GUESS is that if it won't post, you destroyed it's decision making / software (firmware?). It's probably as good as dead.

Maybe someone else can help with this.
