Well if smoke came out of the the other one, I have to assume you reversed the power plug (been there, done that!). I doubt there's anything wrong with the power supply or your computer wouldn't be working at all.

Now when the drive smoked you may have damaged the IDE bus it was connected to.

You should jumper all your drives CS on a modern mobo by-the-way.

You may have plug turned upside down that powers the optical drive. The longest flat edge of the connector should be towards the bottom of the drive.

Can you elaborate on that one?
Do you see the machine POST?
What happens when it stops? Any errors or other messages?
Does your BIOS recognize ANY of your drives?

I am just guessing with limited information that you have an IDE or PSU cable plugged backwards, and/or bent pins on either the mobo IDE port(s) or the drives IDE port(s).
You could also have a bad IDE cable, or could even have a bad mobo.

I never jumper drives with CS. I manually set them so I know how they will get detected. If I remember correctly this improved boot time in some systems because the BIOS doesn't have to search and assign the drives.

Take the jumper cap off of the Western Digital hard drive and leave it off. Without any jumper, it is set to Single Master, which is what WD's generally want. After doing that, power the computer up and see if the drive is detected now.

youre thinking of autodetect in the bios, that will slow things down a bit. cs is a hardware standard, and takes exactly the same amount of time as master/slave. drive settings are determined by position on the cable, middle=slave, furthest=master. no guesswork there.

if the bios say the Hard Drive then that ment that it wasn't the mobo that was screwing up

What does that mean?

It aggravates me to no end when someone here is asking for help and cannot even answer simple questions from a member that is trying to help them.
It looks like some posters do not even read the replies.

Have a nice weekend.

I have tried the same IDE Cable and the same power cable that i had hooked up to the hard drive and it didn't work for the CD Drive but for the Hard Drive it did.

P.S. Know the two CD Drives that worked in the working system don't work after i tried it in this system.

This best I can make of what I have read here, I would say that it is a good bet that your power supply is a piece of junk. Try another one !!!

P.S. - You may want to check for damage to your various components that may have been caused by faulty power supply.

I went to staples and got a Antec smartpower 500W and a new cd drive. When i turn on the computer it sees the hd but doesn't the cd drive. The cd drive opens and closes but the bios doesn't see it!

geez, always with the power supply :disgust:

Make sure you are plugging the ide cable in the right way! Try using that same working IDE cable from your HDD and plug your HDD into the secondary IDE channel to make sure that's working. I'm assuming you were putting your hdd on IDE1 and ur cd-rom on IDE2. Make sure that works and then try just plugging in your cd-rom into your primary IDE1 channel and see if your bios detects it. I'm assuming this is a verified working cd-rom also.

btw, if you're plugging in your cd-rom into its own channel, it'll work on master, slave OR cable select.

I figured out the problem. It was the PSU, IDE Cable and the IDE port itself. So i switched the cable and the where the IDE cable was going and it worked but i have to have the hard drive in a IDE Raid.

Bad news. You let the magic smoke out. It won't work when the magic smoke gets out. You MUST keep the magic smoke inside your hardware if you want it to work. If it gets out, it won't work anymore. Get a new drive with smoke still inside.

;)
