this is just what it is id'd as according spybot. i can't figure out how to get rid of it. not sure if this is the culpret but when i browse with firefox at random times an ie window pops up, it doesn't go to any specific sites it just pops up and gets in my way. i've run avg checks, spybot checks. and it won't go away. i would just wipe my hard drive and install a fresh version of xp but the great service of dell didn't provide me with an xp disc. any ideas?

Bring snacks and follow directions step-by-step 🙂

In terms of the post question, yes, I bought a used PC that had smitfraud as just one of the many malware infections I had to eliminate. And now mech Bgon has shown you a good way to get rid of it because convention spyware scanners seldom are able to get rid of it.

Well I had enough time and beer last night, started reading through that page and did everything it asked me to and...SUCCESS!!! Thanks mechBgon!

Thanks moreso to John for putting that page together  I have some security suggestions on this page that will help prevent it happening again.

Mech, thanks for the plug. There's no doubt that the tools in the rogueremoval kit eliminate most of the nasty infections that conventional scanners are unable to detect/remove.
