I've got a system which is almost 5 years old. I've made a few upgrades on the way, but a few weeks ago, the original PSU literally burned out (Antec TPII 480, RIP). So I replaced it with a 650 watt Earthwatts, investigated the inside of the computer, and determined that there was nothing else damaged. It's been a few days now, having used it normally (that includes leaving it on 24/7), and then I powered it down and unplugged everything because of severe weather threats. I plugged it back in today, turned it on, and smelled a familiar smell after having done so. I immediately powered it down, double-checked all the fans, did a little more canned air dusting, and put it back together, unable to determine the source of the burn odor. It didn't smell like this when I put the new PSU in (new PSU smell was there), and the only other component that sort of smelled like this was the processor, but the the processor fan is working fine. I checked the computer temperatures on boot, and the system indicates they're fine. What could be the problem here?
Specs for the system are as follows:
Epox EP-9NPA+ULTRA (socket 939, Nforce4 Ultra) motherboard
Opteron 180 (dual-core, upgraded from an Athlon 64)
GeForce 6600GT graphics card
3 gigs RAM, 4 sticks (nothing fancy with heat sinks or anything)
160 gig IDE hard drive
500 gig SATA hard drive
Rosewill SATA card for the hard drive (the SATA ports on the mobo are no longer functional)
IDE DVD burner
Cooler Master CM-690 case (upgraded from original, all fans working fine)
Antec Earthwatts 650w PSU (upgraded from the original TPII 480 unit. Best deal for my budget.)
PSU is mounted right-side up, I read from other users that they needed to turn theirs upside-down, but I didn't have any problems with cable length, and I measured where the air vent in the bottom is on the case vs where the bottom fan is on the PSU. I don't think that should be a problem. Also, I am not overclocking.
