There are certain smells that immediately and powerfully return me to when I was 8 years old, just for second. It's usually unexpected and a great little surprise experience. I somehow just smelled one (baseball glove) in the office.

Some favorites:

- new baseball glove
- beach ball
- gasoline (I can't explain that one)
- Zest soap when it's still in the little box
- bubble solution

Anyone else?

natural gas type smell. My grandma's house used to smell like this all the time. She passed away ~7-8 years ago so it's been a while. Smelling it brings me back.

I LOVED that cherry almond scent that some handsoaps had. I would go out of my way to wash my hands just to see if the hand soap had that smellt.

:p

I haven't had it in a long while but black licorice was an amazing smell for me. I also had the weird attraction to the smell of gas/car fumes.

You're all gonna LOVE this one...

He-Man Figures. They had this strangely delightful smell. I'll never forget it.

Oddly enough, there must be some cologne or deoderant that has the exact same smell, because I'll pass by someone with it on and have an instant flashback. I'm too shy to walk up and ask "Hey, what fragrance is that?", so I don't know what it is.

Diesel fumes from an ice-cream truck. Fresh cut grass, even chlorine from a pool in the middle of a hot summer day.

Our 1 acre of grass cut by a driveable mower (grass and exhaust), and our house burning down when I was 4.

My high school football stadium in Corpus Christi, TX was right across the street from a bread factory. The factory would be cranking sometimes during games and it would smell sooooooooooooooo good.

Worst childhood smell - When I lived in Emporia, KS, my house was downwind from a slaughterhouse.

Hmmm - what about sounds? Growing up on a military base, hearing jets/planes brings me back.

Pancakes off the griddle

Smell of the Misquito Defogger. We use to run behind it when I was a kid. Who knew it was toxic and could kill you?

Who let the dogs out!

Patchouli, I swear to god, I remember that He-Man guy who had all the interchangable heads and arms & legs and it smelled just like patchouli. I don't remember the other ones smelling like that though, but I remember that guy came in a box with all the parts and when I opened it (I don't think I even made it out of Toys R Us), the smell came wafting out.

Me too, my dad was a logger and smelled like that when he came home from work. :)

Creosote brings back happy memories of summertime when my dad was putting a fence around one of our pastures. (Probably not happy memories for him, that damned piece of ground was mostly rock. )

I got some bath stuff for a gift at xmas that brought back memories of what I think was Avon little-girl bath stuff or perfume that I had when I was very young.

Cardamom smells like christmas.

The smell of lime from whitewashed buildings baking in the sun accompanied by the sharp bite of evergreen shrubs.
The intoxicating miasma of blocks and blocks of lilacs in bloom.
