I knowingly smelled one once, not really knowing what to expect... I was definitely not expecting that strong of a primal/involuntary response as I seriously lept backward out of my chair

it's fun to find out ways to make our instincts override any potential conscious thought.
smelling something so nose-tingling as harmful/seemingly harmful gasses pretty much evokes a sense of urgency to escape the situation.
Get locked up in a CS (tear) gas chamber. Ooo the excitement that occurs in there is fun.Gas mask on - you just feel a slight burning sensation on exposed skin as it gets into pores. Soon as you take off the mask and have your eyes open, boom you slam them shut and just tearing up and going all blurry. Gets into your lungs and your whole respiratory system feels like its on fire, impossible not to get into a coughing fit and puking is a common occurrence, and you start pacing and kind of flailing because you want out. Then they make you talk, which makes it worse. And you can't think straight for shit because your body is focused too much on the urgent desire to escape. Fun times, fun times.
