Smelled something burning while trying to free my car from the snow today

I eventually got it free, but I was doing a lot of wheel spinning and I smelled something burning after a while. Any idea what this was from? My friend thought it was my tires, but it seems odd that my tires would be smelling like that after spinning on ice/snow.

I have a 1995 Geo Prizm, stick.
 
I don't see how it could've been the clutch since my clutch has not been slipping at all and I wasn't riding it while trying to free myself.
