Smell of gas

For an engineering project, I'm using a weed eater I got at a thrift shop for $10. Well, it leaks. It smells, and I live in a college apartment, so the only place I have to store it is in my car (because I can just air it out with the windows open). Well, it leaks, and now I have 2-stroke gas (with the oil mixed with it) all over my passenger seat. I don't care about the unsightly stain, but how do I get the smell out? I know gas evaporates quickly... will it go away in a few days? Just for a bonus, any suggestions on removing the stain (because I plan on selling this car later)?

"Gas also known as gasoline, petrol, petroleum. To remove the smell from your clothing pour a cup of vinegar into the wash cycle. It will remove the smell.

Other ways to remove odours from clothing is to soak in a solution of vinegar and water over night. Then wash as normal. Also you can soak in a solution of 1 cup of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) and a gallon of water."

ripped it from a google search... so I do not know the validity of this.

ATOTers are usually a little curious about certain things...

Why am I using a weed eater? What's it for?

I'm stuck in a freshman "Intro to Engineering" class, but anyway.... We're supposed to design (in groups) a boat for the "Great Navel Orange Race". ("Navel" is a play on the word "Naval" I guess.) Without using glue of any kind, it's supposed to go around the school fountain, picking up (or dragging) an orange on the way. The budget is $50 (hence the thrift shop part of it). My group is hooked up with one motorhead (me), the son of a marina worker (for cheap fiberglass), and a guy with the hookup on a hobby shop (for cheap used RC electronics). Additionally, we have a very creative and immature guy to spark our creativity, and we have a very cautious and practical guy to keep us grounded. This has got to be the best group I've been in yet.

I hate that smell with a passion...don't know why. Whenever I mow the lawn or do any yard work with a gas operated tool I always have to take a shower before I go on to do anything else. I don't know why it bothers me so much. At times I will even inconvenience myself by cutting a tree down with a axe/saw just to avoid using the chainsaw.
