This wireless router keeps showing up as a good deal in a couple places. The latest is at outpost.com, as pointed out on techb@rgains.com.

I forget what outpost wants for shipping these days, but not a bad deal.

I use the hardwire version of this, and love it, but I want one of these.

I'll try to find some links to deals on the PCI/PCMCIA cards too.

REBATE looks like it would work any place, even for the ones you guys got at Amazon.

EDIT: fixed linky

I heard that there are lots of compatibility problems between Bluetooth (802.11a) solutions from different vendors. Is this really the case? I will probably wait to use Bluetooth/wireless networks if competing products can't even conform to the same standard yet!

Are my concerns warranted?

Yes, Bluetooth products from different vendors currently do have some compatibility problems. However, the SMC7004AWBR is not Bluetooth, it's 802.11b (2.4Ghz 11mbps wireless).

Ahh, I see... it was the fact that both operate in the unregulated 2.4 GHz band that confused me. Thanks Apex! I think I will go ahead and get this, hopefully it won't matter which vendor I buy the Wireless LAN NICs vs. Router from!

(For anyone interested, here is a great little article which I just came across explaining the difference between Bluetooth and 802.11b.)

By the way, does anyone know of compatibility problems with 802.11b (a.k.a. WLAN a.k.a. Wireless Ethernet) implementations that I should be aware of? Or, if I buy this router now, can I use any 802.11b NIC from any vendor with it?

Thanks in advance for any info.

SMC 7000AWBR Review

Check out PracticallyNetworked.com, there seems to be quite a group of people who prefer the Lucent Silver and Gold cards over any other wireless NIC. Check out the PN - Forums.

The key=Range.

The Lucents/Orinco(sp?) nics seem to do much better in range per user review. (I Personally haven't used them). The difference between silver and gold cards is the encryption level (128bit on the gold).

FWIW, as far as compatibility, I've used cards from Linksys & IBM with various Access Points and haven't had any problems. The various vendors products seem to play well together, but, there is a difference in range and performance (to an extent).

i want to get one of these, but can't find it at staples, people keep telling me it's there, anyone found it?

(i would like staples to pricematch outpost, and use a coupon)
