If this is the one i'm thinking of, i think its better cause it has a print server. signal strength is a bit more too i believe.

Great deal! I have the D-Link 713P which is made by the same company that makes the SMC and I am very happy with mine. You can find full reviews here:

I seem to remember reading that there's no antenna port.

This wireless router (I think the model number is 7004AWBR) got Editor's Choice from PCMag, but I have no idea why cuz its throughput was only about average compared to other models. Also, according to Practically Networked, the throughput drops by ~45% when 128-bit WEP is enabled. I was ALMOST going to get this, because $100 for this particular router is CHEAP...but I think I'll hold out for something with MAC address blocking.

The AWBR does do MAC address control. It didn't when it first was released, but a firmware update a couple revs ago added it.

You might take a little performance hit by switching MAC address control on though. I don't know if this has been improved in the more recent firmwares.

Dangit...the throughput is only 1.9 Mbps with 128-bit WEP enabled....guess I'll hold out...dangit....

Whew....got the last one at my local CompUSA in Smyrna, GA. A guy came in like 2 minutes after me, noticed that I was carrying it, and said, "So, YOU got the last one!"

Sorry, man. Wish they had one more for you too.....

For those who have a wireless setup, can you tell any difference in internet speeds with a wireless setup vs a wired setup?

TIA,

I notice no slowdown between wired and wireless for internet. Moving large files at 11mbps instead of 100mbps is a little slow, but its rare I move large files around my home network.

The only drawback I have found with wireless is that if there is a 2.4ghz phone near the router or computer your connection will drop when the phone is in use. I tried all 11 channels on the SMC and channes 8 and 11 seem to be the ones with the least interference from the phone.

The only other thing that bugs me is that if I move my laptop to the back of the house I get a large drop in signal strength. I am not to worried about it though because its not the routers fault, it has more to do with the Microwave, Bathroom(all that ceramic tile),and 10 walls in the middle. I am going to recable where I have the router placed to minimize the obstructions to 2 walls and see if that boosts the signal in the back of the house.

My goal is to be able to use the wireless to work from my hammock out back. If anyone has any ideas on boosting the signal with this specific router post them here! :)

I have both this router and the Belkin Wirless Router Model FSD6230-3. I went to Compusa today and bought this SMC because I didn't like the Belkin. The Belkin substantially reduced my speed using email, but seemed ok otherwise. Also I wanted the print server.

The setup menu and IP adress of both the SMC and the Belkin are the same. The set-up menus appear to be identical. I now believe they are identical except for the print server function on the SMC. The LED's and the ethernet connections are in the exact same location on both.

EDIT: I just upgraded the SMC firmware to V1.41.004 and it seems to help the speed.

Got the last one at the South Orlando store. Someone had put this one on a bottom shelf and behind another brand. Soooo whoever you are, thanks. :D
