SMC Cable Modem Networking Help

I just recently bought the SMC 4 port router to share my cable modem connection. I connected the first computer(Win 98 AMD 650) and it works fine. I tried to connect the second computer(Win 98SE Celeron 400, Netgear FA 310TX) and it won't talk to the router. The cable is good because I used it on the first computer and I can connect. None of the lights come on when I try to connect the second computer. The NIC card's lights doesn't come on. The port's light on the router doesn't come on. I hooked it up straight to the cable modem and the lights come on but I haven't been able to get it to work, yet.

I've mirrored the settings on the cards.
I've re-installed the NIC card.
I've re-installed Windows.
I've deleted the NIC card.
I've tried all 4 ports on the router.
I've cloned the MAC address.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

My best guess is that the NIC is dead. My condolences 🙁

Edit: There should be a small DOS based program included with the NIC software that can test it. I'm pretty sure she puked, though.

I ran the DOS program and it doesn't even see the card.....it told me to check for any IRQ conflicts....I checked under System Devices and it doesn't show any.....I guess I will try another NIC and see......

If by re-seating, you mean physically taking the card out and re-installing it, then yes. The light that comes on when I hook it directly to the cable modem is the Activity light.....should I try the other pci slots and see if that makes any difference?

ahh..i didn't read your initial post well enough. so it does sound like it's seated properly...BUT if the config utility doesn't see it, there's definitely a problem. it IS a pci NIC right?

i'd try a different pci slot, sure. seems like the next logical step.

Well, apparently, the Netgear card was bad. What threw me off is that I didn't have the correct software for the second card that I tried. The link light came on but I didn't configure it right. The 3rd card worked immediately and so did the 4th. I try to configured the Netgear as close to the 2 cards that worked as much as possible but I couldn't 3even get a link like so my guess is it's bad. I think the problem that I had with the second card has to do with duplex vs half duplex....I messed it with more later when I have time! It's working now and I'm on to other things...thanks for the help.
