I just ordered this item from NECXDIRECT.

The price is $99.95 + $5.95 Ground shipping (I got 2nd. Day for $7.95)
(Buy.com's price is $123.95 + $6.32 Ground shipping)

link

The advantages of the SMC Barricade SMC7004BR is that the SMC Barricade SMC7004BR Router has a four port switch (like the Linksys, Netgear etc.) :frown: and also has integrated print server (unlike the Linksys and Netgear etc.) :p and a 9-pin serial modem port to connect to a backup 56K or ISDN modem. (again, unlike the Linksys and Netgear etc.) :p

A definite deal. :D

I got mine from Onvia for $99.95. This is a great little piece of hardware. You can set up which ports you want open to the net very easily ( for gaming, etc )

Anyone successfully run a Mechwarrior 4 game server on this? I can't get my linksys to keep people connected for very long, even after opening ports and going on the DMZ. I've taken the linksys router out of the loop, and didn't seem to have the problem. Ergo, it's the linksys. If this router can run games better than the linksys, I'll buy it.

I'm notsure since I don't play mechwarrior, but have you tried checking up on it at DSLreports.com? They have a huge section devoted to routers, with people rating them and giving feedback. Check it out.

Go the MechWarrior main site. Most game sites typically have a FAQ or troubleshooting section. It is mostly ports or a range of ports that need to be opened on your end. I couldn't get DialPad to work, so I had to open some ports to get it to work.

Thanks,
Sun

This is a great buy on a great piece of hardware. Very easy to setup, and the print server is invaluable.

Jesseche,

Thanks, I just ordered one. Especially, since Buy.com raised their price by $4 to to $123.95. What's funny is that if you go through the Networking Hardware menu, the Barricade shows up as $124.95 on the middle of the page (below the Linksys). But, when you click on the link, it's the $99.95 as advertised on the homepage.

This is a decent router, but I'll advise not to upgrade to the latest firmware for a while. I have the Linksys 4-port, and thought I'd give the SMC a try because I thought the printer server was a cool feature. Picked one up at Outpost a month ago and set it up. It was running fine until I upgraded to the latest firmware. That was when it became very, very slow and eventually stopped routing traffic completely. I had heard about people having this problem in some newsgroups. I'm back on my Linksys now, which seems to be a little faster than the SMC, and no firmware problems. All their firmware upgrades went fine, and each time, they add new features to the interface. So to those of you getting this router, you may want to take precaution upgrading the firmware...

I got mine for $116, but it had free overnight shipping from Outpost.com. I had it like 18 hours after I ordered it (not bad!).

Make sure you put the latest firmware on it as soon as you get it (especially if you use it with PPPoE DSL!). It fixes a lot of bugs.

I've heard other complaints about Linksys routers not being able to keep connections/not working with port mappings correctly. Might be a firmware problem.

Check Jesseche's link above, it's $99 + `$6 S/H at NecxDirect.com.
About the $124 Buy.com price, that's what somwhat said in another thread. I know that it was $119.95 a few days ago. Maybe he included shipping in the $124 price at Buy.com.

I have both Linksys and SMC barricade I love the Barricade used to love the linksys till I switched off of cable modem and onto damn Bellsouths PPPoE DSL anyway linksys has problems with Bellsouths dsl in certain areas and turns out mine is one of them. Orderded SMC and the thing has worked great. I also love the fact that it has a real to life power button on it. Haven't tried the Print thing yet but heard it's soso. Only thing I don't like is every time you change any say port mappings etc it requires a reboot?? What is that??? Linksys didn't do that and can be very annoying for dhcp users since it's constantly changing your ip. Oh well its been very solid other than that.

forgot to mention, however, that it doesn't have a connecting port to add on more hubs/switches, and you'll have to get a crossover cable to do it which is kinda bleah

for the same price, you might wanna go with the netgear rt314 . . .from what i have been reading about problems with firmware with the SMC barricade, and problems with data corruption (amoong other things) in the Netgear BEFSR41, i have not seen many problems with the rt314. . .if anybody has any, please post. . .

here's how you get the rt314 for 99.95 shipped:
pricematch at staples with the price from amazon to bring it down to 109 shipped. . .then, use a coupon code and get another 25 off. . .
even for 109, its still a great router. . .and i dont know about the other ones, but this one comes with a CAT5 length of rj45, if it matters to you. . .

go for the rt314 if your willing to give up the built-in printer dealli. . .

The price difference between the Netgear and the SMC is irrelevant. The SMC appears to be the better unit because of the printer server. It's true the Netgear is a better looking lay out with all the cables on the back, but features, performance and ease of set up are the real importance. Lets have more posts about the way the unit works, not just about the cost. A great deal on a bad router will get you in the end. Rick.

i have this router too.
at the end of december, buy.com had it for $98. onvia, outpost, egghead all had it for $99. buy.com was also free shipping over 100.
i ordered it with a pair of yamaha ystm30 speakers (58 and 20 rebate)
so both those items cost me $106 after $30 coupon and yamaha rebate.

anyway, i dont know if its better than linksys and netgear
but it is a great router
and it has two features those other routers don't have that make it the one to get:
1. the aforementioned printserver
2. you can attach a 56k modem as well as your dsl/cable modem to use as a backup. this was very important for me.

heres a nice piece on it.

finally, necx still has it for $99.95 plus $6 shipping.

This is a sweet router. As someone above said, if you Bellsouth.net customer, this baby is more reliable than the damn linky which drove me insane. One drawback on the SMC Barracade's is that it doesn't support Bi-directional printers. A lot peeps report problems. Otherwise, it's very stable and realiable. I own the 7-port version and am pleased with it. I just wish it had better logging capabilities. >Good Deal BUMP<

All this worrying about whether or not your printer is "bi" is a little homophobic don't you think? :)
