I got my SMC7004BR from the amazon deal. Setup was pretty easy, they did make some changes from other post ive read. The little pamplet instruction that it use to come with now is a small brochue type instruction book. They only include ONE ethernet cable instead of TWO! Overall very easy to setup. The unit gets pretty hot so dont leave it on the carpet, have it raised.

I got the router working, but i have 1 big issue. It keeps disconnecting me every 5mins! I set the idle time to "o" to disable it and checked off "auto connect" to keep the connection alive if its dropped. I upgraded to the latest firmware. I live in Brooklyn, NY using Verizon DSL. I have the Westell modem. I was going to call tech support but i was too tired to. I might give them a call tonite. Has anyone else had this problem ?? Please help. Thanks!

I really didn't have the same problem as you but there WAS only ONE Ethernet cable inside of it. I bought mine at a retail store so fortunately, I was able to exchange mine and before I left, I opened up the new one and voila, still only ONE cable. I think somebody messed up in their packaging of these babies.

I had kind of a hard time configuring it too. The tech support guy told me to go to 'Toolbox' and clone the MAC address or something. Then reboot the router and after that, I was surfing. Hope that helps.

Have you tried flashing it to the latest firmware - 1.92e? Head over to the forums of dslreports.com. There's a SMC forum under Hardware Routers. There's a bunch of DSL (and cable)people who can help you.

I was looking at the checklist on the outside of the box and the list only listed ONE ethernet cable. So i guess SMC is only including 1 in their newer barricades. :(

As for the firmware, yes i flashed it to the latest. :( This could be why its acting all crazy. :(

Perhaps you have a bad unit... I've worked with several of these units, have one here myself, and they never get more than "slightly warm", never "pretty hot"!

Well, i might have been a little exagerrating about the heat. I had the router on the carpet and i believe that was insulating the heat in. I have it raised now and its not hot at all or even warm.

I did a search on "SMC" and a whole lot of topic came up and i was snooping thru them and i tried a tip someone mentioned and it seemed to work. Hard to understand at first but i got it.

Well. I first powered off the DSL modem & Router. Waited 20sec. Powered ONLY the DSL Modem back on, let it run its Power On Test until it was ready. then Turned on the Router and it worked fine so far *knock on wood* :D

I hope its not a bad unit. :( I do have a Netgear RT314 still in the box. I would of stayed with the Netgear unit, but the SMC has a serial for DUN and a print server! Plus the amazon deal was unbeatable! Oh well, hope it goes well. :)

I just got the same one in today. I haven't tried setting it up yet. Are you talking about the $50.00 rebate? If so was there any info pertaining to it in the box? I have nothing that says I get a rebate, but when I ordered it from Amazon, it was advertised as.

Yes that is the deal. You were suppose to have order the barricade between 6/3/01 to 6/9/01. There was a link to a gif that had the rebate page. I believe they took that page down. If you would check the hotdeal forum you can get more info. here is the direct link to the thread, they have a link to the rebate gif. Link: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?start=1&catid=40&threadid=457498

If you still have problems with the pic. Email me, ill send you the gif to print.

As for the router problem, i havent had too much problem with it. Works great.
