SMC Barricade Question

Hey, has anyone gotten the 4 port 10/100 SMC Barricade Broadband router to work with Verizon DSL? Im trying it out free for a month and the Barricade is having a hell of a time connecting with PPPoE. On the rare occasion that it actually connects, the speed is about 10kbps. I can connect the DSL modem directly to my computer and it works just fine. Does anyone know what the problem is here?

Most DSL provider use PPPOE protocol to authenticates the connection via User ID, and Password (that what WinPOET does).

You have to type the DSL ID and PW into the Router menu, and check in the Router menu the place to keep the connection alive (always on). Instruction to the specific Router will be in the Router Manual.

Open your Browser Option menu, and make sure that you are connecting through the LAN (default PPPOE is a DialUp).

As long as you don't switch off the DSL Modem, and the Router you are connected "forever"

You can uninstall WinPOET and Netscape (or whatever software they dished you).

The Router?s PPPOE capacity is independent from the Computer, and it keeps the connection alive.

Working through the Router should yield faster smoother Internet connection.

I'm using verizon DSL here in ORegon with SMC barricade and it's been working perfectly.
Here in Oregon, we have to set our router to dynamic IP not PPoE.

Bump for this guy and myself because I'm having the same exact problem. I'm not on Verizon, but I still can't get it to connect w/ PPPoE. The smc site says to upgrade the firmware, and I did but it still doesn't work. The computers recognize each other fine, but I just can't get it to connect...

ISPs use variety of authentication methods. It not the same even within the same carrier in the same location. Last year my ISP gave me PPPOE and my connection is currently the same as it was last year. Currently the ISP is changing the method for new customers in the same locations.

So first, each one of you has to know which method is used in your specific system. If you don?t know call your ISP and ask.

I am positive my connection is setup for PPPOE, yet I am having no luck setting the Barricade up like this. I also notice the same thing that happens to Epyon has happened to me. Sometimes after rebooting, the router will connect, but it will be at terrible speeds and only last for a few minutes even though the router is set never to drop connection/resume automatically. I'm going to try and RMA this thing if I ever get a reply from the company. Maybe I'll have better luck with a Linksys, because I'm damn sure I set this thing up exactly how it's supposed to be...sooooooo frustrating when you've done everything like you've read/been told/know how, and it still doesn't work...

Im not quite ready to get rid of the Barricade since mine works flawlessly with my cable modem. Im just trying DSL out free for a month and it kind of pissed me off that the damn thing couldnt connect. Im starting to wonder if Verizon is using some sort of non standard PPPoE. Like sending some extra info or something.

Don't doubt the router, because it's a great router. It's just a matter of figuring out how to set it up. The menus in the Barricade setup are pretty straight forward. Just find out if Verizon in New York uses PPPoE, and just enter all that info in the PPPoE page. Hope this helps.

Yeah the setup was straight forward... too bad it didnt work. Im in NJ. I got rid of DSL because I couldnt use it with the router.
