I have one of the first versions of the smc barricade. Model number is 7004br. I have looked through tech support and this model has nothing but firmware upgrades.

Anyhow I am trying to setup a printer on the barricade. The instructions I have are for windows 95/98 and NT. I remember seeing on their site right after xp was released instructions for my model. If anyone has one or is familiar with it can give me some help it would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure there is an option in the Barricade's configuration to turn the Print Server on or off - once it's on and the printer is connected you just need to configure the clients with a network printer using the Barricade's IP address. I've got one at home and can look at it later if you need more help

I have looked through the settings I looked again and didn't see it. I don't know if that is the problem though. On the status page of the router it shows printer as ready.

The manual in the smc CD says to use a tcp/ip port and use a PRTmate all-in-1 out of the device list. That is not available out of the list. The smc disk has a couple of folders with setup programs. The thing is it is 9x and NT. I remember looking on smc's site about how to set it up on xp. They had a page or 2 on it. I didn't download it at the time since I didn't have use for it at the time. Figuring they wouldn't take it off of their page.

In the mean time I will use the program in the nt folder and see if that will do it.

Edit/
I just installed the latest firmware. I used the cd I had and used the NT installer. I went to setup tcp/ip port I still didn't have the above mentioned device type in the list.

Spherrod can you give me some details on your setup? Maybe you downloaded the xp files when they were up on the net? Actually as I remember there wasn't a download. Seems like it was using windows built in stuff. I don't know memory is slipping. ;)

I right click on my printer in the printers folder and select properties. The ports tab. According to the manual I need a tcp/ip port. I do that entering the 192.0.0.1 or what ever of the router. It spends some time searching and comes back and says can't find device. Then it gives me a list of devices if I am sure the ip number is right. Problem is I can't find the device the manual calls for to use.

hey nice link. After reading through it the 4th or 5th time I finally got all of the settings right and it started like it was going to print. printer has the error lights going. I guess I am going to have to do more reading. As I recall this printer was about out of toner when I took it off line. I may have to break down and buy another cartrage.

The good thing about it is I didn't get an error pop up from print manager the last time. Good sign. Printer actually started like it was going to print then the light lit up. I think it is printer related. Seems like the port is setup correctly anyhow.

Thanks again pkypkypky. It is definately working now. Printer showed paper jam but didn't find anything. Pushed on a roller and printed out a 10 page doc.

I did notice it seems quite slow. The above mentioned 10 page doc printed at probobly 1 page per minute. As soon as a page finished transfering it printed. Not a big deal just wondering if it is just me or is this normal behavior.

I am using a lexmark e210 which I found somewhere is a host based printer. A loose comparison explanation was given similar to hardware modem and a winmodem. The winmodem needs processing from cpu. Anyhow I was thinking this maybe slowing it down for me also.

no prob bob :D I don't understand much of the rest you are saying, but the speed seems to be unusually slow. Are you saying it's taking a while for it to get sent to your printer or just plain print? And why do you have to push down on a roller. Actually...I probably can't help you out from here, but good luck and maybe someone else can

What I am saying is on the 10 page doc I printed yesterday. I clicked print and it took probobly 20 seconds for the first page to print. It is a laser printer it printed quick then took approx another 20 seconds then the next page came out. Etc.

As far as the roller is concerned it was nothing. I took out the toner to look for jamed paper as per the error lights. There was no paper in the printer at all. So I started messing with the obvious. I pressed on the roller lightly and it snaped a little. I put the toner back in and jam was cleared.

I don't know what a host based printer is either. I just know when it comes to modems the hardware modem was considered best and the winmodems considered inferior because of the cpu time it needed was a lot higher. I know I usually always used a winmodem and had no problems. Especially when cpu speeds went up. I was just thinking that if the printer requires more cpu time, maybe that can account for the lag time between pages printed. I am just trying to figure out if this is slow or not.

My asus k7n8x deluxe has 2 lan ports on it. I thought I remember reading 1 is faster than the other. I will have to check on that. I know my road runner seems slow the past couple of days figured it to be road runner problems. Maybe it is my lan speed. I don't know just thinking out loud.

yea, I did. Right after I posted the last time.

It is taking me qite some time to get the page from the router. Longer than I ever remember. I did just update the firmware the other day when I was messing with getting this thing going.
