SMC Barricade as Print Server on Linux Network.... How do I find it?

I have an SMC Barricade splitting up the cable modem connection at my house and the printer is hooked up to it.

Windows sees the printer. No problem.

Linux, on the other hand, I'm having a problem with.

I have three choices for network printer. Local, Remote of SMB/95/98. Of course it's not Local, and SMB/95/98 asks me for a server host, server ID, etc. If I just select remote printer, I get a list that has my Deskject 812C on it, but when I go to print a test page, I GET NOTHING! I'm on the network via the router, so I know I should be able to see the printer too!

HOW DO I DO THIS?!?!

Ug! The program is just so vague. :(

Your choices are just local, remote (which is supposed to be if it's hooked up to another Unix box) or SMB (if it's hooked up to a box running SMB or a Win9x box).

Aaargh!!!!!

Dude...its up to you... that Barricade supports both Windows (SMB) and Unix Remote (lpd) printing... easiest is to use remote lpd... Just put in the IP address of the printer server and the name of the print queue that the Barriacde calls your printer. You will prob need to configure your print server on the barricade first to get all the info you need..you cant just plug it in and expect it to work.

How do I find out the IP of the printer server? I haven't done anything to the Barricade, and when Mandrake is supposed to auto configure, it doesn't see it. :(

If I can log into the Barricade via web browser, what do I set?

BTW: If I seem frustrated, it's because I am. I think I've tried every possible combination (except for entering an IP because I don't know what to enter) and I still can't even print a test page. :(

I thought I was close. Knowing the default IP of my Barricade, I selected CUPS and lp and went to the field where you enter the IP address of the printer.

I printed a test page and nada. Sigh.

I bet it's one of those things that's so simple, it's ridiculous. :(

The IP of the printer is whatever IP the barricade is using for print services. I should be a local net address (probably 10.something).

The defalt ip for my barricade is 192.168.123.254 . Thats what it came set from the factory for me.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. :) I actually know what the IP of the barricade is already. That's not helping me. I'm just wondering how I set it up. The only printer installation method I can find that allows me to enter an IP is CUPS, lp and then when I put in the IP of the printer (the only field you can enter, other than port and I don't know what that should be, if anything) and it still doesn't work. :(

Anyone, if you could just tell me how you do it, I'd appreciate it. :(

ok we can do this.... what Linux distribution are you using?

Try running the PrintConf tool.. its really easy to add a printer that way.

I'm using Mandrake 8.0.

I can get there... and then hit the wall. I just don't know what options to pick. I sware I picked them all! :p

Thanks Hitman. Just tell me what I need to do. ;)

I would be willing to bet that the IP for the barricade and the IP it's using for print services are different. But that would just be my guess. What do your documententation on the barricade say about print services?

And for port number, my services file says LP operates on port 515.

The SMC doesn't say squat about IP or port specifically for the printer. It merely states that the default IP address is 192.168.123.254, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

Even knowing this, Mandrake is not clear as to where to enter this.

Example, if the PC was on another machine, then you only need to tell it the name of the machine (//idiot) and a login name and password (if applicable). But it's not on a machine, it's on a print server.

I started up the PrintConf tool again, and it clear that I want "Remote Printer", since the printer is neither running on an SMB servre nor is it running local. When I select remote, I'm asked if it's CUPS or lp. Neither one gives me fields that look famiiar (ip, subnet mask).

Certainly someone here has instaled a printer server on a Linux box. :( It doesn't have to be a Barricade. I think the same rules apply for any print server.

Remote Server or Printer Device URI?

I don't think you know what I'm looking at. There is no field for IP address. Maybe I need to GET there first. ;)

I just selected CUPS Printer and have the choice on local (no), SMB (no), remote (maybe) or printer device URI (maybe).

Which one do I pick?

You say put in the remote address for the SMB box, but there is no SMB box. It's a print server. Besides, selecting SMB gives me the option of name of computer, login and password. If I put the IP in as name of computer, it still doesn't work so that's not it.

OK... I chose Remote Server and the lpd. I told it the remote name was http://192.168.123.254/
and the queue was L1.

I sent a test page, but it never printed. But when I looked at the Barricade via http://192.168.123.254/ in a browser, it said (at the exact moment I sent the job) that I was logged in (it had the IP of my computer).

so... I'm talking, I'm just not printing. Hmmm......

Ok...drop the http://

Just put in the IP ONLY... and I think you have gotten to the right place.

You can use lp or CUPS *REMOTE*.

Dropped the http and still no print.

It seems as if I'm missing something like a port. It's hitting the Barricade (according to the log), but I don't think it knows what to do once it gets there.

This is out of the manual downloaded from SMC.

5.3 Configuring on Unix based Platforms

Please follow the traditional configuration procedure on Unix platforms to set up the printserver of this product. The printer name is ?lp.?

Try using lp instead of l1.

Yep. That's exactly what it says in the manual. A lot of help it is, eh.

The printer name is and always has been "lp". The queue is "L1". Two different things.

Thanks, though.

He meant try "lp" as the queue name.

Tried that first. Nothing. Switched to using L1 because that's what the Mandrake documentation suggests. :( The Mandrake manual does a little more 'splaining (not much) and uses "lp" for printer name and "L1" for queue.
