I just got this unit and I'm trying to get it working on a home LAN, all running XP. The 10/100 switch works, and all the computers see each other, transfer files ok, etc. I cannot get the built-in print server to work at all. The printer is a Panasonic laser with built-in XP support. It works directly off each computer, but not off the printer port connection on the SMC. None of the computers see the printer attached this way. The manual has directions for W98 and W2k, but not XP. The setup procedure is somewhat different, and the SMC website is no help. Ideas?

It's there, they just hide it well. It's actually under Technical Support -> Drivers & Downloads -> select product -> listed in the last drop down.

Direct Link To the PDF Doc

BTW: SMC tech support isn't bad, but you have to wait 1:30 mins on a week night before you get a person or at least you did last time I RMA'd a product from them. If you ever have to call, do it in the morning. Then you only wait 15 mins.

Edit: Spelling

Thanks man. Wow! Nineteen pages of configuration just to get a printer working on this router. I'll try it tonight and report back if I'm successful.

Here's another question about this SMC broadband router: It has a serial port for a backup modem which can also be used as your primary connection to the internet. This is how I want to use it. I've never seen a setup like this. Does the modem connect automatically when you start your browser? Can you turn it off remotely? Does a connection icon appear on the taskbar indicating connection speed? Sorry for the dumb questions....I'm sort of new at this.

If you use the modem with the router, you will not get a connection icon for the modem in windows. The only connection icon you will see in windows is for the NIC (If you have it setup to be displayed)

It's easier than they make it look.

I've never setup an ABR this way, but I had a BR(older model) set up this way and the answer is.... Yes, except, as DreDay stated, for the taskbar icon. Everything is done through the web gui. You can specify a max idle time for disconnect and autoreconnect for when a computer tries to get to the net. If you have problems setting it up, clicking Help in the upper right provides some useful info.

Thanks again Mje. I got the print server working with my Panasonic laser. The procedure is different with XP compared to the directions for W2k in the manual. Really wasn't very difficult at all.

Now to get the modem working. I guess I need to find the correct initialization string for these modems. I can use a Zoom V92 or a Hayes V90 Accura 4703US. I tried the Hayes without the initialization string. It dials ok but won't connect. Thanks for the help.

I got the Hayes modem working, attached to the router, using the following init. string:

AT&F&C1&D2&Q5&K3S38=0S95=42

I can now share this connection from all the computers on the LAN. However, when I shut down the browser, the modem does not shut down, even though I specified it to turn off when idle 300 seconds (5 minutes). It never shuts down. Perhaps it's something in the init. string?

Another problem. I use Eudora. It cannot recieve messages. I recieve the following message: Cannot load dialog Error 623 system could not find the phone book entry. A search of the Eudora settings didn't help me. I'm feeling really stupid. Any ideas please?

One more question: How can I tell my connection speed with this setup?

On not disconnecting:
I only have experience with the BR model on this... I have an abr now, but with ADSL. It worked on the BR, are you sure nothing is trying to access the internet (aim... email..)?

On Eudora:
No idea.

On Connection Speed:
login to the router, and go to status.
