SMC is generally pretty good from what I've seen.
This is a SMCGS5
http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=viewProduct&localeCode=EN_USA&pid=1435
PDF datasheet says it has Auto MDI which means you can plug in crossover or straight cables and it will autodetect and adjust.
One thing to watch out for on cheap switches gigabit (and even 100mb switches) is, does the switch have the ability to do FULL traffic on each port? Since network traffic can be full duplex, each port would need 2 gigabit bandwidth. 5 ports. So that means this needs 10 gigabit forwarding capability to be able to handle maximum possible traffic.

PDF datasheet:
http://www.smc.com/files/AO/DS_GS5_8.pdf
Says it can handle 10 gigabits so this is ok there. Looks like a decent unmanaged switch.
Jumbo frames up to 9K which is good, some so called jumbo frames dont support much beyond the minimum jumbo frame. I've had cases where cards and switches support a low jumbo frame size, and one that isn't common between them, so I've had to turn off jumbo frames. This switch shouldn't have that problem.

And the price is good too :)

DARN...I have a Mastercard gift card with $33.52 left on it and I want a decent brand 5 port gigabit switch with cabling on back side, LED's on front. Both Buy.com and Chiefvalue.com have Netgear and Dlink switches for $35, but they both can't do multiple payment mehtods.

Anyone have a coupon code that would bring my total down enough, or know who can handle payments from multiple cards? (all the B&M stores are at least $50 for those same items)

Get the SMC if you can. The dlink one I just saw in another thread didn't seem to support jumbo frames.

For those thinking about buying this - I have the 8-port version and so far I couldn't get the jumbo frames to work properly. Enabled them on all the computers and servers, but things such as browsing the files on a remote computer kept freezing explorer, so had to turn jumbo frames off. Still a great switch, and the transfer rate is noticeably faster over my old 10/100 baystack switch, but just keep in mind that jumbo frames may not work in all instances. My guess is that it has something to do with my network cards, but didn't have much time to really look into the details.

I've this same model, I got jumbo frames to work fine. Was able to get 104 MB/sec transfer rates with a 9K frame size.

I do occasionally have problems with it however: for some reason, it just "freezes" and stops switching packets. I have to cycle power to make it work again. It's infrequent, only happening every month or two.
