SMB vs AFP file shares and previews

Here is setup A:
Mac client, 10.4/10.5
Mac server (just a normal mac, w/ file sharing), 10.3
connection between the two = DSL+VPN
afp, previews show up fairly quickly given the fact it's over DSL.

setup B:
mac client, 10.4/10.5
win2k8 file server, normal file sharing on it.
connection = DSL+VPN
smb, pretty much *feels* like it's downloading everything before previewing...

setup C:
same as B, but 10mbit local connections, spiffy and quick

So, my question is, is SMB causing the slow downs for previews (eg, icons view mode, directory of jpgs, the quick previews that show up)? Or is there something else I'm missing?

any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks

FWIW AFP is quicker to display on my home server than SMB (on the same server, same directories).

i don't really notice a difference of the two locally, it's just when over a slow connection... it seems rather painful. even just listing large directories (no more than maybe 50 subfolders though..)

I've heard many comments over the years at how slow SMB can be with the BSD's and have reproduced it many times.
With OSX I find that SMB runs at around 60% of what the actual medium capacity is, while AFP saturates it.

I wish I had more info to give you; just wanted to point that SMB is slow with OS x

yeah, I've notice it slow at home actually, but that was more an issue w/ my freenas box I think.

speaking of smb... does anyone know when connection from mac to a windows file server, via SMB... why the sharename is always in capitals (even though when selecting it from the list, it shows it as it's suppose to be)? Is there ANY way around this?
