SMB access with Asus aicloud

SO i have an asus AC-RT66U wireless router, and have attached a external HD to it, which lets me access the drive locally and also by using the aicloud app on my Nexus 4.

Now, i am able to use andSMB to access and upload/download files from the drive accross the network on my phone and tablet. with AIcloud, it puts my drive online and gives me "cloud" access. The app has a address in it that i can use to share content with friends on the go.

Has anyone been able to access their drive with andSMB or a SMB client, off the local network, and upload/download to and from the drive ? I feel like it is possible.

Thanks !

I use either andSMB or just directly mount the CIFS share to my phone's file system when I'm on my home network.

I use SFTP when I'm accessing my network shares via WAN.

I would not want to expose CIFS/SMB over the WAN. If you have to do it via SMB, I'd setup a VPN to get local access remotely.
