trying as much as possible to get away from google fb etc. gmail email has been moved to yandex. fb profile is deleted. no other social sites used. I see no appeal in using any of their products.

looking for an os that has better privacy barriers. if I own an android phone (lg v30) already, is it possible to flash a new OS on it?

Have you looked at Lineage OS? It is based on open source Android, and I believe they do have a build for the V30. Lineage OS was forked from CyanogenMod by the community when Cyanogen Inc shut down.

Be aware that the newest release does have some bugs, though, so you'll want to carefully research whether it will meet your needs or not. It also depends upon Google Play for apps, though you at least have the ability to decide what apps you want to use.

As Steltek said, Lineage OS is open source version of Android. It was of course designed by Google but Lineage OS itself does not need to have any Google services installed to run properly.

You could possibly find an older phone that runs Blackberry OS like the Blackberry Priv or even a webOS phone but those won't be secure since development for those operating systems ceased long ago.

Sadly there is pretty much zero competition in this market. For everything other than Apple your only choice is some flavour of android. Tough titties if you don’t want either.

the market should be forced to provide more options since it is currently so uncompetitive.
