Seriously, we need 1995 back. All I ever see outside is screens and people hunched over them. You can put a Bulldog right up to their face and squeeze and they still wouldn't look up. And most every company wants your data and life now never mind the apps. If I hear app one more time . . . .

I had Android rubbish and its a joke. Same with iOS. All this always connected always online always social rubbish is ridiculous. Candybars that talk and text are barely acceptable. Damn I want the 90s back. :'(

The term 'app' was in use in the 90's. Hardly anything new.

Except that back then an app was defined as something useful. Now it's a term for some web based malware thingy that people install on their mobile device for some reason.

But honestly, things like Facebook are a mixed bag but nobody is forcing it on you and you can be as active or as inactive as you'd like. And Honestly I would have agreed with your latter statement several years ago, but both Android and iOS have matured alot since then. You may not have the full power or usefulness of a dekstop/laptop running Windows but that isn't what they're for. To be honest, I find myself using my laptop less and less since I got a tablet and I may not bother getting one ever again.

DER GET OFF MAH LAWN YOU LITTLE SHITS!!!

No but seriously, I can relate. But these days companies have us by the balls. As conservative as I am, this is the one place where the federal government does need the power to regulate and make laws dictating what a company can/can't track with their "apps" and such. Also tighter regulations about bullshit employers requiring people to be on-call 24/7 without being paid for it is utter bullshit too.

I can't try to act innocent, I'm looking at my phone all the time. But unlike most, my employer pays for mine at least :p

They are forcing it on you. A pizza I had recently had the entire front covered in ads for their latest app and their latest way of ordering via a pizze emoji Iphone mock up and all. How about a plain old box with a logo? Really? An emoji?

You are expected to be online. You type my real name in, you won't find anything. No pictures. No tags. Nothing primary or high school related. I've looked myself up on all those sites plus reverse lookups and old throwaway emails and there is nothing. Yet you are still expected to pretend like you care.

It needs to stop. It needs to die.

EDIT: This is beauty:

i'm with you. i can't stand going to eat at chipotle or cosi and waiting in line and seeing everyone looking down at their phone. something about it just grinds my gears.

i only have a facebook account because i'm working on an app that requires facebook accounts to sign into the app. we're using facebook authentication to create an account on the app.

if you can't beat em, join em!

All tools can be misused, remove one farce and another will take its place. Educate the people, teach moderation.

On an old arse desktop. There is a big difference between the rubbish we have now and the internet way back when.

yeah, it's a lot better now

back in the 90's it was still hard to find things. now it's so easy to find just about any conceivable thing i want to look up.

Facebook isn't progress. And why does everyone use the car analogy every single time? I don't live in a cave I've obviously moved on PROGRESS! Nothing to do with anything actually.

What about the television? Has its uses right?

Social media was instrumental in the Arab spring. Just one example. Use it for what you want - it sure uses you :)

It aggravates me. Social media is about as useful as syphilis. And the Arab Spring HA!, fat lot of good that did. The Middle East is still as broken as its always been.

Go live in the woods. Avoid all human contact. Become a hermit.

Problem Solved. :)

To be technical, App is what a program is, i.e application. Why now the smartphone craze took over the rightful name I'll never know.

Yeah, Apps are one-big-privacy-invasion, man. I install an App and it says it will have access to this and this and this and that and maybe watch me take a shower. I fear the future. It's Orwellian.

I agree , that some people do seem like addicts.

They view their phones in public transport.
They view their screens while getting up to exit.
They view their screens while getting off the public transport vehicle (eg train, bus).
They view their screens while walking on the platform.
They view their screens while almost bumping into other people.
They view their screen while getting the bike.
They view their screen while riding a bike, not or hardly paying attention on the road.
They stop viewing their screen while almost in a traffic accident which they almost caused...
They realize nothing happened.
They view their screen...

It is almost a pome.

Yea, the good old days were awesome when I got a beep on my pager, hauled 100# of gear out of the woods, and drove 10 miles to a pay phone to find the secretary had a question about my time sheet. I also enjoyed driving back to the office to get paperwork. Much better than having it sent to my pocket computer.

Sorry but as a cancer patient I adore my smart devices! I can look up my labs & contact my treatment team securely. I can d/load books & movies, communicate with family & friends from anywhere, even my chemo chair. These devices improve my quality of life and expand it. Even when I don't feel well I can participate & that is a beautiful thing to me.
