Smartphone with bluetooth+Laptop=problems

I've got an IBM thinkpad T42 with bluetooth and I've been having difficulty in getting it to sync with my Audiovox 5600 SMT phone which also has blue tooth. I'm using windows XP SP1, active sync 3.8 and I'm unable to in active sync select the bluetooth port.
