My LG optimus G is getting a bit long in the tooth as in battery is getting pretty bad and the on/off button not working very well anymore. Besides that I don't have much complaints about the phone. Would like a similar one again. Especially built quality seemed good as I dropped it on hard floors (ceramic) multiple types and never had any issue.

I prefer similar sized, max size is something like the S7. S7 is top candidate now. I really do want real buttons, not on-screen but capacitive only preferred, just like the Optimus G had. Can't find any phone that has these basic requirements: around 4.6 to 5.2 screen, capacitive buttons and obviously clearly better than by old phone in performance.

Any recommendations?

S7 will be your best bet. The home button is physical (also has the finger print sensor) but the back and menu buttons are capacitive. That's about as good as you can get to meeting your requirements these days.
