Smartmedia XD?

My mom is looking to buy some more Smartmedia storage cards for her digital camera and she is shopping around and came across XD cards. I have never heard of them and cannot find anything english on google about them. Has anyone heard of these and can clarify the difference between XD and standard SmartMedia cards (if one exists)?
 
xD is a new format used by Fuji and Olympus. It's a better format than SmartMedia, unfortunately the two are not compatible in any way
 
They are different standards.

XD are newer then SmartMedia and handle bigger storage and are faster I think. I know they go higher up in storage though.
