Smartmedia Problems - Cannot Format

I've got several smartmedia cards that will not let me remove files from them, or format them. The message pops up saying the cards are write protected. They have never had a write protect sticker on them.

Is there anyway to format these and eliminate the writeprotect issue.

The camera will not let me format these either.

Help is appreciated.
