Time to use an alternative FTP software now. I always loved SmartFTP though. It is now $36.95 for Home edition and $49.95 for Professional edition. Once current licenses go up you will no longer be able to download for free.

My brother noticed it this morning and told me about it. I wonder if they really expect to keep the same customer base as before. Surely they know that they got their "10 million users" from the fact of it being great and most of all, free. But it's alright. I understand that they have to make money. Just unfortunate to see no basic free edition any longer.

Yeah, it's too bad they removed the free edition. However, I actually prefer FileZilla anyway, which is free.

That sucks. But it's time to move on. I was tired of constantly being forced to update. I'd just set my clock/date back when I wanted to use it. It was slow too.

Yeah, that's what I always use.

The only thing I was it did was minimize to the taskbar like cuteftp can.

Other than that, it's great.

Yes both Filezilla and FireFTP are good. If you want a standalone app go with Filezilla, if you want an integrated Firefox plugin go with FireFTP.

Yeah, Filezilla works great. I miss the autoconnect when I opened up CuteFTP (because I really only go to one site).

I thought the point was he didn't want to pay for it. As far as I know the 'free' version of that lasts for 30 days before they either lock you out or make you wait when you launch the program.

Reg edit. ;)
Uninstall the program, clear all traces of it, and re-install it.
or...
Set your system clock backwards like Oldsmoboat.

I used to use SmartFTP because I liked the interface, though it did have its issues. However, I put up with them and the nag screen. The forced upgrade thing is unacceptable, though.

That said, I'm now using WinSCP and like it quite a bit. Free, open source and a lot to like.
