I just refomatted my computer and am planning to install XP pro. I have the smartdrv.exe on a floppy. But when i type smartdrv at the ms-dos prompt I get this message:

SMARTdrive cannot be loaded because the XMS driver, HIMEM.SYS is not loaded. Check the CONFIG.SYS file for a device=himem.sys command line.

i am puzzled because when i reformatted before, Smartdrive installed flawlessly.

You need to create a text file named config.sys that contains the line device=himem.sys and put it on the floppy. Make sure himem.sys is also on the floppy.

Smartdrive needs to be loaded into extended memory. Himem.sys is your extended memory driver.

Of course, the proper way to install XP is to just boot off the CD.

It's only faster if you copy the CD to the hard drive first and do the install from there. Read speed on a hard drive is much faster than a CD. I don't waste my time, I can live with the install taking a couple of minutes longer.
