store.apple.com has this tiny 5GB firewire hard drive for $99 with free ground shipping. This drive is the size of a deck of cards. It's bus powered and has the Toshiba 1.8" drive 4200 rpm drive found in the iPod (5GB, obviously). It's actually thinner and lighter than the iPod. It doesn't specifically say, but must be Mac formatted.

A great price for a drive that you can really take anywhere. There is an est. 7 day wait for shipment, so hopefully nothing will happen between now and the ship date.

Edit: Fixed link to store.apple.com. It now goes to the main page. From there, you'll need to go to Accessories:Storage and scroll down about half way to the FireFly. Alternately, you could just search for FireFly from the main Apple Store page.

i guess you get this free if you buy a g4 power mac or powerbook and buy certain upgrades.

cheapest way to get it is buy a g4 powermac, add ultra scsi card for $49, and you get it free.

i guess i fyou were already buying a mac, not a bad deal. it doesnt look like an apple designed product though, very generic firewire look, so maybe it'll start showing up in stores soon.

If you don't want to buy a new system, then $99 is not bad. I bought just the drive and am happy paying $99 + tax rather than paying $1000+ to buy a new system for the free drive.

As far as I know, the drive has been out for a few months and should be available in stores.

True, it's not apple designed, but doesn't look bad. It's small enough that you'll barely notice it. :)

JTP

Edit: Just did a search on price watch and it looks like this is about $100 less then everyone else. Looks Like this might be hot.

For mac users this is a pretty good deal, just load an OS on it and install Drive10 and Norton and you've got yourself a bad a$$ little boot up device that should be able to take care of alot of your problems.

You might want to take a look at the Toshiba site. I'm thinking that the FireFly contains the 1.8" embedded rather than PC card drive. The PC card drive looks quite impressive although it tops out at 5GB. There are larger 1.8" embedded hard drives, like the 10GB in the iPod. In fact, SmartDisk has announced a 20GB USB 2.0 drive, but it is not currently available and will be significantly more expensive.

For those of you who want to know if this is PC compatible, the SmartDisk website indicates that you can reformat this Mac formatted FireFly into a PC formatted FireFly.

I just received shipment confirmation for FedEx ground. Apparently, there is no 7 day wait as quoted when you place the item in your cart.

Sorry about the bad link. I was too lazy to describe the location of the item. The original post has been edited.
