My wife keeps getting more pets... Last weekend, she adopted 2 cats from the humane society. They're living in my garage, so the kids are tending to leave the lights on in there. I have a bunch of t5 florescent bulbs on one switch, so it's like 1200+ watts.

Is there a decent standard light switch out there so I can check the status of the lights and turn them off?

There are lots out there now. If you want something that operates independently I'd look at the Kasa / DLink units. I have a bunch that I tied into smartthings but I think they have a good stand alone app and also interface with Alexa / Google home
