Does anyone know if any of the smart watches keep the contact info stored on the watch, so if you are not in Bluetooth or wifi range, you can still look up numbers?

I suggest you to take a look on Block Modular smart watch. On this watch you would be able to add own block and also you can modify your block. So I think it may be possible with this Block modular smart watch.

One question for the original poster: what kind of smartphone do you use?

However independent you want the watch to be, your choice of phone will dictate what smartwatches you can buy. Most Samsung smartwatches (outside of the Gear S2 and Gear Live) only work with Samsung phones; Android Wear is considerably more limited if you're on an iPhone; and so on.

An Android HTC phone would be used with it in case you forget your phone and lock your keys in the car and can't remember anyone's number. It tends to be harder to forget a watch.

In practice, that means you'll be looking at Android Wear, Gear S2 or a Pebble Time model (original/Steel/Round). I don't believe Android Wear stores contact info locally, although you could theoretically create notes. As for the others, I can't honestly answer at the moment -- even doing some research doesn't turn up much.

I'd go into it assuming the answer is "no." But then again, the odds of needing a phone number you don't remember and forgetting your phone (but not your watch) aren't very high. Heck, if you have the right watch, you can make a phone call from the watch as long as you're close enough to the phone in the first place.

The cellular enabled Gear S2 le5s you call and text without your phone, so I assume it stores contacts locally.
