Smart Switching across access points

I have a long house with access points at each end. Is there a way to facilitate smart Switching across access points as I move around the house? Set them to same side and channel and let them "fight" I find I'm often at the wing end of the house hooked up to the wrong hotspot with no signal and my phone reverts to cellular data, which is a waste. Do I need a mesh network? Or can a pair of hotspots be set up

Hotspots are vz FiOS hotspot and Netgear r6400.

You need a proper mesh network if you want them to hand off in a more robust fashion.

There are many mesh products out there depending on your specific needs. If you plan on upgrading to FiOS's 1gbps plan just remember you'll need some very hefty access points AND client devices to take advantage of the speeds.
