SMART not letting vista install

I got an hp mobo, no way to disable smart in bios.
I got this older 20gig hdd that is giving me a smart error on boot which then prevents me from installing vista onto it.

I think this type of mobo is bad at detecting if the drive is smart compatible.

The drive works fine and im 95% sure it's not going to die.
Is there any other way to disable smart?

I would be willing to reflash the bios is that's possible.

At the least you need to provide the full HP computer model number. What is the SMART error? Have you tried running the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostics? Hard drives have all been SMART-capable for something like a decade now, a 20 gig certainly should be, so maybe there really is something wrong with it. (I know SMART isn't always stable and causes problems for some people.)

Most systems which have SMART enabled allow you to continue past any errors, so how is that preventing you from installing Vista?

Well I'd say find another drive. If Fujitsu doesn't have an application to scan the drive, try Maxtor's PowerMax. You can write all zeros to the drive and that wil also check the SMART status, and check for bad sectors.
