Smart meter

If your utility is like the two we've had since smart meters came out, be prepared for your light bill to go up considerably.
The electric companies always tried to say that the difference was because the old mechanical meters were so inefficient...but no one really believes that. (right or wrong)

Pfft, I think all of Multnomah/Washington County (Portland Metro) has been like this for ages. What's the surrounding cover on it though? Anti-tamper? I just take them right off the socket with a clip of a metal tag.

From what I can tell there isn't one. But I wasn't able to get close enough to really examine it...too much fucking snow on the ground.

Duct-tape some huge magnets from an old electric motor to the sides of that beast and see if your light bill goes down. D:

Mine didn't change but my old meter was only 9 years old

I Have one. Do they do anything special I should know about?
Or are they just more accurate and utility can read them remotely?

Bingo.

Less people going from home to home reading the meters. If you don't let them put one out, you get charged more money.

The neat thing about these is you can get nearly real time usage info on your hydro company's website.

The down side is tiered billing. You will now be paying more per kwh based on the time of the day.

I remember before these came out here the hydro company sent people a kit that you put on your analog meter and it was basically a sensor that looked at the wheel and sensed the black mark. Essentially it was a power meter so you can look at your real time usage. It was actually really cool. We had this wireless receiver and as soon as you turned on the oven or a light or anything the kwh would change.

Then a month later they installed the smart meters, making this new toy obsolete. Wonder how much money they spent on that.
