"Smart" Handguns

Aquaman

Lifer
I just read this in the paper today (don't know if it's a repost but I did do a seach and found nothing):

Several American states want to outlaw any hand gun that isn't "smart", ie allows only the owner to fire it. Thus manufactuers are scrambling to find suitable technology (finger-print and wrist radios with matching frequencies have been proposed).

But now Australian gun-maker Metal Storm Ltd. will combine it's electric gunn with the New Jersey Institute of Technology's grip microchip and make the smart gun a reality.

The owner's grip would be programmed by practise firing and the microchip in the weapon would remember the grip. Pretty smart gun. We just hopw the owner is at least as smart.

What do you think?

ps. Poll coming

Cheers,
Aquaman

no thanks, i can see it already, hello mr. serial killer could you please stand over there while i change my batteries. make yourself at home mr. homeinvader i burn't my hand at work last night and now my stupid smart gun don't work

"outlaw dumb-guns and only outlaws will have dumb-guns"

If people sell xbox mod chips they'll certainly sell smart-gun chips. I can see some value in consensual use for gun safety of non-protection guns like sport pistols and hunting rifles.

No, because the recognition will never be 100% effective. Might be helpful for police but they would probably reject it for the same reason.

Eh, it's about on the same level as "Let me unlock my gun safe, remove my trigger lock, and unlock the separate box that my ammo is stored in." A gun is pretty useless for hone defense unless it's kept loaded all the time in a very accessible place, which I really think is highly unsafe.

No. Think about it...what if something on it screwed up -- wouldn't let you fire..and some drunk guy is breaking down your door with a crowbar? I'll stick with my 'dumb' guns that I know will work. 🙂

a gun is a TOOL. a hammer is a TOOL. they can both be abused to kill someone.

the way I see it, if someone abuses their tool, their right to use that tool shall be revoked. and a quick smack around would be nice, too.

so what's this supposed to prevent? kids from using their parents guns?

Remember everyone, if you have a firearm in your house, your child will find it and kill your dog, your neighbours, and then himself! </Public FUD>

Or a criminal taking a cop's gun and shooting the cop. IIRC, ~15% of cop killings occur from the cop's own gun. No, I do not have a link.

How will this stop criminals? They'll just chop the hands of off the owner and use their hands to shoot the gun.... 😉

a big no-no!

"Honey, if there's an intruder in the house, just let him take what he wants. you cannot use my gun anyway so i'll deal with him when I get back!"

There's no reason it couldn't be programmed for multiple owners.
