Ok so I have this computer, comes up smart failure backup your data imediately press f1 to continue. Well it's been doing this for at least a year and I haven't had a problem with the computer.

Can I disable smart in the bios or on the hard drive somehow?

Just replace the drive...

Why would you keep using it for a year with the SMART failure...?

Back-up your data and replace the drive.

Well, I'm wondering if it is not some kind of malfunction which is reporting a failure when really the drive is fine, this isn't actually my computer, I myself prob would have replaced the drive hehe. Is there a way to disable it or not?

I looked in the bios and I did not see a way to disable it, at least not in this bios. I'ts a hp pavilion desktop.

Smart usually can be disabled. Some OEMs have a super-secret bios mode which give you the full range of options. I think it's F11 on various HP models.

But more to the point, hard drives are dirt cheap. Data is very valuable.

Or swap out the cable to see if you get the same issue. Could be a faulty calbe, but it's unlikly. If you still get the same error after the cable swap, it's recommended to replace the drive. You probably run into one of those die hard drives that still works for a while until it crash someday.

I've got a small collection of bad hard drives here that's growing - five in the past 2 months from various people I know locally. A Samsung, Seagate, Western Digital, and two Maxtors. I don't know what it is, Nov/Dec are just when drives go bad, must be something with the temperature shifts. Anyways, you just never win playing chicken against a hard drive.
