Smart failure on HD

My bosses computer is getting a Smart failure error on HD. Says "Immediatly backup your data and replace DisK" Fairly self expanitary

Only problem, when I hit f1 to continue it hangs on windows screen. It then gave me the option to start in safe mode but that hangs on scanning C drive. I don't think he has anyhting real critical on the drive but does anyone know how I can get past the windows hang to try and save some of his data.

Thanks

honestly, not sure you can at the moment. If the drive is broken you might be screwed. I'd try and put the drive in another machine and copy the important data off. My only suggestion.
