SMART error on hard drive

It says

"Warning! The drive WDC WD2500KS, 250.01GB indicated a S.M.A.R.T. error condition.

Immediately back-up your data and replace this hard disk drive!
A failure may be imminent."

Also, the temperature is at 253C!

Should I call WD and ask for a replacement?

I think your temp monitor is just crapping out and thats why its giving the error. There is no way your hard drive is running at 253C, thats almost 500F.

You're right, it has happened to me before. Sometimes, the temperature is shown as 253C. But 90% of the time, it is around 34C or so.

Now the temperature is back to 34C and the hard drive imminent failure message is gone.

Instead, I get this message:

"Warning!
Active Smart detected attribute changing in the drive WDC WD2500KS 250.01GB.
Show more information?"

I'll just buy some more dvd+rs today just to be on the safe side. I'll still back up my data.

Should I be concerned about my hard drive?

What did it say when you said "Show more information"?

If it's speaking of actual file attributes, I wouldn't worry about it.

It said:

"1 SMART atttribute changed. Drive temperature changed. SMART reported good status."

This is better. Previously it was reporting the status of the drive as "bad". I think I'll still back up just to be on the safe side.
