SMART command failure at startup

Was working on the desktop in sig and it locked up. Now I'm getting 'SMART command failure' at startup, just hangs on OS load screen.

I searched for a fix, but much of what I found was for HDDs. Is this a failure of the Gigabyte board or the Samsung SSD?

Checked the SATA and power connections... all OK. Swapped SATA cable just for fun... no go.

Need some help, please! Where do I go from here...?

SMART is a hard drive failure prediction system. You should probably assume that your HD has failed or is failing. Any writing to the drive could damage it more, so you should consider that before doing anything, including booting from it. The safest thing to do now if you have important data on it is to remove it from the system and make an image of it or copy the data off of it, if possible. You should do this BEFORE you start trying to "fix" it.

Should I try to clone it (I use Acronis) or just hook it up to another computer and try to access the files?

You can do either.

The most important thing is to recover any files you really need and don't have backed up ASAP. The longer you try to access the drive, the more likely you are to have a final catastrophic failure that prevents you from getting anything else off it.

I tried a few different things... I can't even get the computer to recognize the drive any longer.

Thank goodness I backed the entire system up just Tuesday...
